Gum Disease
Gum disease causes 75% of adult tooth loss and at least
80% of the population has some degree of gum disease.
This disease is an infection
of the gums and jawbones and is caused by the colonization
of bacteria underneath the tartar on your teeth. Often
there are no noticeable symptoms for a long time – until
damage is already done. A dentist or hygienist must do
a thorough and complete examination to detect gum disease,
especially in its early stages.
Bacteria and the chemical by-products that the body uses
to fight these bacteria can enter the blood stream and
cause serious problems in distant parts of the body.
In fact, gum disease has been linked to heart disease,
stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births, and low birth weight.
We offer the following services in this area:
- Charting and Diagnostic Services - including
X-rays, and examination
of the teeth and gums
- In-office Therapy - cleaning of gums and gum pockets,
deep scaling
and root planing
- Antibiotic Powder - this is applied to gums after
scaling and root
planing and uses a delayed-response action to help
promote healing
- Post-therapy Fluoride Treatments
- Follow-up Visits - these are very important since
we need to recheck for
any signs of returning bacteria
